Water Dance

--For Enzo from Nonni

Enzo dances in the center
of the shopping mall fountain
surrounded by sleepy shoppers
watching with gathering amusement

He ignores them all
focused on the water spouts
and me
his bewitched and transfixed audience

He chases the random water sprays
catches a stream in his cupped hands
stops another with the toe of his shoe
dodges a third with a quick two-step

Then he slowly sneaks up
on a dormant spout
hunkers down low
his eye to its nozzle

And its sudden spray
of course catches him off guard
douses his face his hair
and his dancing bright eyes

And he shouts in glee
jumps high in the air
and runs to his laughing
embracing Nonni
