We just got back from the Grand Canyon. Still to come: more details and maybe more photos. For now, you can see the first batch of photos and maps showing where we've been.
(Click the overview map above to enlarge)
See the highlighted bits? Detailed maps are available of each of these sections.
High-res PDF Maps:
The detailed maps have waypoints marked 001, 002, etc.
Here are some crude notes indicating what we did or found at each spot.
Here's the first batch of photos, from Will and Heather's camera.
Here's the second batch of photos, from Will's parents' camera.
Now this is something. Want interactive arial maps of where we explored? Here's how:
- Download and install USAPhotoMaps from JDMCox Software.
- Download this tracklog (right-click, save as). It contains thousands of datapoints illustrating our path.
- Launch USAPhotoMaps.
- Enter 36.4 and -113.3 as the initial Lat and Lon coordinates.
- Use the [-] (minus) key to zoom all the way out to 64 meters per pixel.
- Use the GPS -> Tracks -> Display Menu, and select the "2004-10-7_GC_tracklog.csv" file you downloaded in step 2.
- Notice the pitchfork shaped path you see in the map above.
- Press "F" to download arial photos covering the entire area. Here's an example of what you can generate: a close up of our lost meanderings around Andrus Canyon. This view clearly shows the trail heading down the canyon we looked for and didn't find.
- Pick your jaw up off the floor. Use the arrow keys to scroll, use [+] and [-] to zoom in and out, and press "F" to download missing picture data.
- Go back to http://jdmcox.com/, scroll to the bottom and donate at least $10 to the guy who coded this incredible little app. (And I guess you can thank Microsoft and Terraserver for the source data.)
More photos to come. Check back soon!
Great photos and maps and notes!! I'll send a batch of pics soon--
