A 4D Rubik's Cube

Posted by spblat on June 8, 2003 10:59 PM

Want to make your brain hurt?

Click here to learn about a 4-dimensional version of Rubik's cube. Then download the simulation and try to solve it. Or at least play with it for awhile.

The original 3D cube has more possibilities than the age of the universe in seconds.

This 4D cube has more possibilities than the number of atoms in the universe.

Ow.

Fyodor on Network Security

Fyodor wrote Nmap, a world-class network scanning tool (which was subtly featured in a scene in Matrix Reloaded). Here is an amazingly insightful interview he did on Slashdot.

Telling Humans and Computers Apart

Posted by spblat on May 16, 2003 03:39 PM

I just installed a great new Spam filter (TMDA) that forces you to prove you're human before it will deliver your e-mail to me. For now, spammers don't bother to reply to these confirmation requests, so I have instantly gone from receiving over 100 spams per day to zero. It's amazing! When the spammers catch on and start replying to my confirmations, I'll be ready, with a technology like those covered by The CAPTCHA Project.

Electric Bugaloo!

I found elizzle bugizzle dot cizzle while looking for "Horn Dog" by Overseeer. It's the MAD track from a Mitsubishi Endeavor ad I've been seeing. Turns out it's a way cool site even without the track--nice purdy blog ya got there!

Madonna Tries to Stop P2P

This is classic. Madonna's new album, American Life, came out last week (and I think it might be as good as her last two). Anticipating (correctly) that it would be sought in all the peer-to-peer networks, Madonna and her label injected a false copy of the album into the P2P universe. Read on for the wacky result.

Links, Links, Links

Posted by spblat on April 29, 2003 11:59 PM

oldlinks.png For years, I maintained a links page, instead of using browser bookmarks like normal people. This is for a few reasons: 1) when there's an easy way and a hard way to do something with technology, I tend to be drawn to the hard way--the weirder and more time consuming the better; 2) I'm always blowing up machines, and got sick of forgetting to back up my bookmarks file; and 3) in any given week, I use lots of different computers, some mine and some not. I need my bookmarks anytime, anywhere! So here they are, in the "Links" category of my fancy new Blog. Mainly I use the ones on the left side of this page.

Link of the Week: Cruft

"The SETI screen saver, like ET himself, encounters difficulty calling home and despairing during an overnight run creates 312 copies of its icon in an (impressively expanded) system tray that fills half the screen."

Link of the week: Exploding CDs

"The general recommendation is that you never stand close to a 64x drive, if it isn't mounted in an explosion proof enclosure. You could have your stomach perforated."
